A genuine book of spells (or ‘grimoire’) from 18th century Germany, the Clavis Inferni. The sword and branch refer to God’s twinned powers of destruction and peace. A Latin text below reads “Qui facis mirabilia magna solus finis coronat opus,” roughly “You who alone doeth great wonders: the end shall crown the work.” Books like this flourished throughout the Enlightenment.
